What to expect when working with an architect

When working with an architect, you should expect to work with a highly qualified professional. They should understand your goals and needs, and what you are seeking to achieve with your building project. An architect is also expected to meet the Architects Code of Conduct and Practice.

The Code sets out the professional standards expected of all UK architects, and all architects are expected to follow its terms in every aspect of their work and conduct. The Code requires architects to act with integrity, honesty and respect. You should take the time to familiarise yourself with the Code and the standards it sets of the professional you are working with.

What should I do if something goes wrong?

One of ARB’s primary duties is to protect the public.

If you have an issue with the service you are being provided with by an architect, you should refer to the terms of engagement and contract you agreed. Your terms of engagement should explain what to do if you have a complaint, and you may be able to resolve the issue without the need to report it to ARB. If, however, you are unable to reach a resolution and need help from a third party, you should raise a complaint to ARB. We will be able to provide advice and can investigate your complaint.

We can only investigate complaints about architects – we can’t investigate other types of building design professionals. You can find out more about making a complaint about an architect’s service to ARB here.
