John is a chartered architect and graduate from the Birmingham School of Architecture with over 35 years’ experience, having roots within both academia and commercial private practice. Following an initial appointment as a Research Fellow with York University Design Unit at the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies, his research findings in conservation and residential typologies evolved with a series of live projects. These were developed in his subsequent role as a partner and director within private practice. Direct links with the profession have been maintained with the RIBA at branch, regional and national levels, with former committee membership of education panels and former chair of the RIBA Professional Education Steering Group.
Currently, he is Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham as Director of Professional Studies and Part 3, but also actively involved at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels with studio and project management, as well as professional studies. Previous and current appointments as external examiner or professional examiner are held within Universities and Schools of Architecture at Bath, Cardiff, Portsmouth, Oxford Brookes, Newcastle, Leeds, Lincoln, Westminster, UWE Bristol and Malaga. He is also a director of a pioneering aviation museum, and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
