Architects Register
We can’t recommend an architect to you, but you can search the Architects Register quickly and easily. It is the definitive list of all UK architects, if someone is not on the Register they’re not an architect – it’s as simple as that.
You can search the Register in a range of ways including by an architect’s name or location.
We understand that hiring an architect can be a daunting prospect, particularly if you’ve not done it before, so we’ve produced the short video below to help you get started.
You should always check the Register to see if someone is a genuine architect, so you can make an informed choice about who to hire for your building project. By law, anyone who describes themselves as an architect when involved in designing or constructing buildings must be properly qualified, insured and registered with us. If someone has told you they are an architect but you can’t find them on the Architects Register, you can make a complaint to us.
When choosing an architect, you might want to think about:
- getting an architect who specialises in the type of work you are thinking of doing
- whether you want an architect from a small or large practice
- whether you want an architect with a modern approach to design, or one who is more traditional
Cost is often a very important factor to consider when choosing an architect. It is worth remembering that the cheapest quote may not always be the best value for money. There are many ways of working out fees – for example, they can be fixed fees, percentage cost (where the fee is fixed as a percentage of the construction costs) or hourly rates. When you and your architect have agreed how the fees will be worked out, your architect will include this in the contract.
