A qualified Industrial Design Engineer and ergonomist, I have worked in the private sector for many years, having built up a family owned property business. I have been a Liverpool City Councillor since 1986, specialising in regeneration, economic growth and culture, and hold a series of leadership positions relating to these areas, usually working across the public /private sector divide. I was the lead member responsible for Liverpool’s successful bid to become European Capital of Culture. As Independent Chair of the N.W. Regional Centre of Excellence I led the development of a Regional Design Review Panel and helped develop and deliver a regional understanding of the economic impact of design, and the impact of design on developing sustainable communities.  My work in improving quality in the built environment was recognised by a personal award by CABE. I am Chairman of Mersey Care NHS Trust and Chair of Cosmopolitan Housing Association.  I have a trained background in regulatory work, having chaired the Liverpool Standards Committee and served as a Non-executive Director on the Standards Board for England. I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a member of the Institute of Directors..

Alex Wright is Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching and Head of Architecture at the University of Bath. Alex studied as an undergraduate at Bath before undertaking his Diploma in Architecture at Cambridge University and his Masters in Design at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, where he studied as a Harkness Fellow. Alex was previously employed by ARB as an Independent Examiner, and also served on the RIBA and ARB's Joint Visiting Board Panel. Alex has acted as a visiting critic at several universities, and is currently an External Examiner at Queens University Belfast, University of Kent and Cardiff University.  He is also an Expert Advisor to the Department of Culture Arts and Leisure (NI) on architecture and the built environment and a member of the South West Design Review Group. Alex is a member of the SCHOSA Council (Standing Conference of Heads of Schools of Architecture) and will be Chair of SCHOSA for two years from April 2012.

Arun Singh OBE is an international lawyer he was formerly a partner of Masons (now Pinsent Masons) and Head of International Commercial Law at KPMG Legal. He has specialised in Construction and Engineering Law and cross border legal and regulatory matters. He has a wide range of Board experience working as a partner and non-executive director in the public sector for UKTI, advisory groups at the Foreign Office and BIS (as DTI)  and of two international investment funds, one listed on the London Stock Exchange, chairing the Audit Committee and Investment Committee. He has a focus on professional business insight and corporate governance. He is a Visiting Professor in International Business, Leadership and Negotiations to Salford University Business School, Manchester, Visiting Lecturer to the Moller Centre for Executive Education, and Associate of Moller PSFG, Churchill College, University of Cambridge, and Manchester Business School.

He has undertaken post graduate studies in intercultural Management at the Judge Business School, Cambridge and completed studies in Notarial Practice.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and was appointed an OBE in January 1999 for services to international trade and investment.

Professor Alan Jago was educated at the University of Southampton and University College, London.  He has recently retired as Pro Vice Chancellor at the University of Westminster. He was formerly Dean of one of the ten Schools of the University, the School of Architecture and the Built Environment and Professor of Urban Development. Prior to joining Westminster he worked at Middlesex University and also in a number of local government posts in the UK and Sweden. His research interests include education for sustainable development and comparative public policy.  He serves as a reviewer, assessor and auditor for the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, a role he has undertaken for the last ten years, involving scrutiny of many British higher education institutions.  He has served on a number of professional committees and working groups involved in higher education and built environment research.

Neil took a degree in Economics from Cambridge University and, forsaking the attractions of a career in finance, trained as a teacher at the University of Leicester. He 'learned his craft' at King Henry VIII School, Coventry and then moved up the career ladder in Essex and Suffolk with a series of steps as Head of Department, Head of Sixth Form and Deputy Headteacher. In this role of Deputy Head he had the opportunity to work with local and national architects on the rebuilding of the 'flagship' school of Suffolk County Council - Northgate High School, Ipswich. Following this he moved to become Headteacher of Sudbury Upper School before returning to Northgate as Head in 1992. Following retirement from Headship, he moved to a consultant head role within Suffolk County Council in September 2009, combining that with his position as a Board member of Ofqual.  He has recently joined the Press Complaints Commission as a Public Commissioner.

After completing my degree in the History of Architecture I enrolled on a business course.  After numerous temporary jobs, I joined Feilden and Mawson Architects in Norwich as a Technologist.  After leaving in 1992, I ran my own small practice, carrying out many small domestic and commercial projects, a few one-off houses, as well as alterations and repairs to listed buildings.  I was an associate with Purcell Miller Triton LLP from May 2008 to September 2011, and now have my own practice, Ruth Brennan Architects Ltd. I am a member of CIAT as well as the RIBA, and an accredited conservation architect.

Andrew Mortimer is passionate about Architecture. He studied at the University of Sheffield and qualified as an architect in 2000. Andrew is a Partner of RMA Architects in North London. Active in the day to day practice of architecture, he understands the responsibilities and difficulties faced by small businesses and by young architects. He has experience across a wide range of urban design and architectural projects, including large scale mixed used projects for national developers, strategic masterplanning for housebuilders and housing associations, refurbishment and renewal of community and education buildings.  Andrew understands the commercial realities of development and regeneration projects, with the key role of the architect to add value by increasing the design quality of our buildings and improving the built environment; doing the very best job we can for our clients and communities.

Myra Kinghorn BLib, FCA, CDir, is both a chartered accountant and chartered director. She has a wide range of Board experience working as an executive and non-executive director. She spent some 13 years working in the accountancy profession before moving to the public sector, with a focus on the financial services environment and investor protection. She was the first Chief Executive of the Pension Protection Fund, and before that Chief Executive of the Investors Compensation Scheme for more than 11 years. Myra is currently Chair both of the Scheme Management Committee of the European Payments Council and the Development Advisory Board at Aberystwyth University.  She is also a Governor of Morley College.

Peter Coe graduated from York University in 1970 with a degree in mediaeval history.  He initially worked as conservation officer to the Council for the Care of Churches before commencing as a national trainee in NHS management. He continued to direct archaeological sites for the Department of the Environment until 1976 when his NHS responsibilities prevented taking his annual leave in the summer season!   By 1982 he had been appointed deputy to the Chief Executive at North West Thames Regional Health Authority with responsibilities for both service and capital planning; as well as introducing into the Region the Public Accounts Committee’s requirements for Public Accountability of Health Authorities. During the 1990s, he was a member of several NHS working groups including the government’s working party on the role and function of “the health authority” and the Chief Medical and Chief Nursing Officer’s joint working group on clinical skills assessment and appraisal. He was Chief Executive to North and East Hertfordshire Health Authorities from 1988 to 1992 when he was appointed as Chief Executive to East London and the City Health Authority.  He was seconded to manage the Prison Health Service in 1999 and in 2000 retired from the NHS. 

He commenced as Registrar of the General Optical Council in 2001; and was responsible for the introduction of the Council’s recommended new Regulatory framework which reflected the Government’s White Paper on the regulation of health care professionals.   An enthusiastic participant in the European Committee for Opticians, he assisted in the development of a European recommended Code of Professional Practice as well as a European wide process for Continuous Education and Training.  After his retirement from the GOC, he was awarded, in 2009, the taught MA in archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology at University College London.  Since then he has been undertaking research in the issues relating to the regulation of listed buildings and conservation areas.  He intends to complete his doctoral thesis by 2013.   He continues to have an avid interest in health care and particularly optical care.  He is a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Spectaclemakers and was appointed Independent Adjudicator of the UK domiciliary eye-care service in 2011.

Hans Eisner was born in Berlin in 1929, where he spent his initial years before emigrating to the UK with his parents.  He attended Manchester Central High Grammar School, following which he began his career in architecture at Manchester College of Art in 1947.  Within weeks he transferred to the University of Manchester School of Architecture, completing his Part 3 in 1953.  He joined RIBA and registered with ARB in the same year while on National Service, from which he was discharged on medical grounds and told to “go and build some schools and hospitals”.  1953 was a busy year for Hans, because in addition to his other achievements, he married Annette Lambert, an English Literature graduate.  Hans followed the advice given to him on his discharge from “the Sappers”, and spent much of his early career in the public sector.  His first appointment was with Middlesbrough Education Committee as an assistant architect, attaining almost at once the position of group leader and executing two 640-place primary schools.  From 1975 to 1983, he was Head of Building Discipline to Devon Area Health Authority, before leaving to set up his own private practice in 1983.

Richard Parnaby studied architecture and planning in Liverpool and Oregon. He worked as an architect in Vancouver in the 1970s and was a partner in Brown &Parnaby Architects in Abergavenny from 1980 to 1996.  Richard taught at the Welsh School of Architecture from 1982 to 1987. In 1996, he joined UWE where he has played a key role in developing the first new school of architecture in the UK since the 1960s centred on unique joint undergraduate courses in architecture and planning and architecture and environmental engineering. He was the first chairman of the Design Commission for Wales established in 2002 by the Welsh Government to champion good architecture, urban design and landscape design. He has been President of the Royal Society of Architects in Wales, a nationally elected member of RIBA council and a member of its board. He is a member of the council of the Standing Conference of Heads of Schools of Architecture (SCHOSA) and a trustee of the Architecture Centre, Bristol.

I am a practitioner and an educator in architecture.  My career as practitioner has included working in Central Government and Local Government, private practice and international organisations. I am a founding Director of a small west London practice established for over 20 years specialising in residential and educational buildings for private and public clients.   I am also a non-executive Director of a larger London practice whose work includes innovative complex buildings in the public and private sector.

As an educator I have been teaching at The Bartlett, UCL for over 20 years, I am Director of Professional Studies where I established a leading UK Part 3 programme.   I also examine at a number of UK schools of architecture. As Sub-Dean and Faculty Tutor I am part of the Faculty management team and engaged in strategic planning responding to changes in higher education affecting the Built Environment. I have always been interested in the delivery of architecture in practice from briefing through to completion and the teaching of practice though participating in pedagogic development at institutional and professional level.

John has over thirty years’ experience as an architect in his own practice. He has won numerous awards for design including ‘Housing Architect of the Year 2008’. Other awards include RIBA Awards, British Homes Awards, Building Awards and Building Sustainable Communities Awards. He won the RIBA Leeds Globe Road Competition and was runner up in the Budapest Conference Centre Competition. His practice is an exemplar employer, being three times the highest placed Architect in the Sunday Times ‘Best Company to Work For’. Other employment awards also include the Architects Journal and Building 2011 Best Employer.

John is a nationally elected member of the RIBA Council and was Vice President for Professional Services. He was also a trustee of the RIBA Board. In addition to these posts he was the Chairman of the RIBA Journal. He is a Trustee of the Architects Benevolent Society, a Member of the Council and a Member of the Executive Committee.

He has been a Visiting Fellow at Oxford Brookes University since 2000.  He is an External Examiner at Huddersfield University and has lectured widely at Cardiff, Manchester, Oxford Brookes and Westminster Universities.

Ros is an independent researcher, evaluator, writer and policy consultant, working on a range of health and social care issues. She has published widely on topics including patients’ experience of services, patient and public involvement, age discrimination and medical professionalism.
Ros has a long record of public service and voluntary appointments at board level, and is particularly interested in professional regulation and in enabling the voices of service users to be heard. Ros is currently a lay member of the National Research Ethics Advisors Panel (part of the Health Research Authority).

Nabila has a degree in Business Law and is a solicitor. She is the Chief Adjudicator for the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Prior to that she was Council Solicitor at the General Teaching Council for England where she was responsible for the provision of legal advice to the Council and oversaw the casework function. She has advised on and presented cases in the magistrates, county and High courts and Court of Appeal; advised on governance, regulatory, legal and policy issues; procured and managed the delivery of external legal resource; managed projects and conducted training for council members, colleagues and clients. She has extensive experience of civil litigation relating to the protection of vulnerable adults and children and was Head of Children’s Legal Services (East) for Birmingham City Council.

Nabila is a school governor for a large primary school in Birmingham and chairs its Finance and Environment Committee. She is also a mentor for Mosaic, a charity that supports underachieving children to realise their ambitions and fulfil their potential.
