Chris Heuvel

ARB Examiner

Chris is a Registered Architect and a Fellow of the RIBA, and has been in practice for over 40 years (having graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne). He is currently Director of a small practice in Nottingham (with a branch in Oslo, Norway). Chris has worked mainly in the residential, retail, commercial, education and health sectors, and has some experience in community masterplanning.

Until September 2021, Chris also operated as Senior Lecturer in Architecture, Technology and Environmental Science at Nottingham Trent University (NTU), where he ran a Professional Certificate in Architecture programme (for graduates in their year-out), in addition to looking after the Level 7 Architect Apprenticeship programme. Chris had previously developed and run a degree programme in building management and a pioneering HNC in facilities management.

Chris holds additional qualifications in town-planning, business management and education. His previous experience includes some 18 years as principal of a one-man private practice (specialising in domestic-scale projects demanding attention to detailing), six years as manager of an architectural practice that he established within a regional building contractor’s company (specialising in the design and build sector), and another six as senior associate within a medium-sized practice in Norwich (for whom he developed an integrated management system combining QA procedures with environmental impact management).

In 2022, Chris was awarded a DArch qualification by NTU for his thesis on how practices can develop their business in conjunction with involvement in community engagement projects.
